Indoor rock climbing is increasing in popularity as it is used to mimic conditions of outdoor rock climbing but in a more controlled area. Primarily they were made of brick but now most indoor rock climbing walls are constructed of plywood over a metal frame and spray coated to give the effect of an outdoor rock face.
Indoor climbing walls vary in height and steepness and are commonly constructed by screwing resin on to wooden boards. They also have a wide range of holds attached to them, resulting in a variety of climbs with different difficulties and has resulted in indoor climbing becoming a successful sport.
Indoor climbing has seen an increase in popularity with adults in the rainy climates as it is more difficult to go outdoor rock climbing. Most people can still get to the indoor climbing walls after work and climb even when it is wet and dark, especially as constant practice is a must. Rock gyms are seen as a more controlled setting with it being a friendlier and safer sport than outdoor climbing.
A lot of climbing walls now arrange birthday parties and youth teams for the sport.
